How to wear ankle cowboy boots
Ankle cowboy boots are the easiest boots to style. Here’s how to wear them with jeans, dresses and skirts, and how to take them from day to dinner.
The short answer
Let your jeans fall over the boot, or cuff or crop them so they stop above it. With dresses and skirts, a short hem or a midi that leaves a little leg showing keeps the boot in view. The one look to skip is a hem that stops right at the top of the shaft.
In the Alvies line, The Rainey is the everyday ankle boot, with a classic J toe and a roomier toe box. The Trinity is the night-out version, with a sharper snip toe. Both have a side zip.
With jeans
- Bootcut and flare: wear them over the boot, so just the toe and heel show.
- Straight leg: let them fall over the boot, or cuff them so they stop just above it.
- Cropped: a hem that ends a little above the boot shows it off.
- Skinny: tuck them in, or let them stack over the top of the shaft.
With dresses and skirts
- Short dresses and skirts: the easiest match, and good for warm days.
- Midi dresses and skirts: leave a little leg between the hem and the boot.
- Slip dresses: a dark ankle boot adds an edge for a night out.
From day to dinner
Keep the boots and change what’s around them: swap a tee for a sweater or a blouse, add a jacket and you’re set for dinner. Alvies pitches The Rainey for a day that runs from a football game to gourmet dining and calls it “the perfect combo of classic and modern, stylish and comfortable.” For a later night, The Trinity’s snip toe dresses things up.
Pick a color
- Black goes with almost everything, from denim to a little black dress.
- Warm browns like the Rainey’s Marfa in the 70s suit denim, cream and earth tones.
- Statement colors like Outlaw Serenade Lavender or the Trinity’s Special Reserve Merlot work best with simple outfits.
Caring for light colors? Alvies advises against mink oil, which can darken shades like Marfa in the 70s and Destination Nowhere Cream. A neutral leather cream every couple of months is enough.
Get the fit right
Alvies says The Rainey and The Trinity run true to size and share the same last, so the same size works in both. The Rainey’s toe box runs a touch roomier. Both come in sizes 5 to 12, including half sizes. Alvies suggests three to five wears before a full day on your feet. More in how cowboy boots should fit.

FAQ
What jeans go with ankle cowboy boots?
Bootcut, flare and straight-leg jeans worn over the boot, or straight and cropped jeans that stop just above it. Skinny jeans can be tucked in.
Can you wear ankle cowboy boots with a dress?
Yes. Short dresses and midis both work. With a midi, leave a little leg showing between the hem and the boot.
Should jeans go over or inside ankle boots?
Usually over the boot, or cuffed so they stop just above it. Tucking works with skinny jeans. Avoid a hem that stops right at the top of the shaft.
Are ankle cowboy boots good for everyday wear?
Yes. A side zip makes them quick to put on, and Alvies says The Rainey breaks in faster than tall styles because the zip-up design reduces pressure at the ankle.
Which Alvies ankle boot should I choose?
The Rainey for an everyday all-rounder with a roomier toe box. The Trinity for a sharper snip toe and nights out.
