What boots to wear to a country concert
You’ll stand, walk and probably dance for hours. Pick a boot you can live in all night, and break it in before the show. Here’s how to choose.
The short answer
Wear cowboy boots you’ve already broken in, with a stacked heel and a cushioned footbed you can stand on for hours. Ankle boots with a side zip are the easiest for a long night. Tall boots suit a dress or skirt and cooler outdoor shows.
From Alvies, The Trinity is the night-out ankle boot, with a snip toe and a side zip. The Rainey is the roomier all-rounder. The Perry Lane is the knee-high statement boot, and Alvies lists music festivals among the places to wear it. For men, The Comal has a snip toe and The Lamar is the classic J toe.
What matters on a concert night
- Comfort for hours: look for a cushioned insole and a stacked heel. Alvies boots have a comfort insole over a cork footbed, a stacked leather heel and a non-slip rubber bottom.
- Break-in before the show: new boots need a few wears. Alvies suggests three to five wears before a full day on your feet in The Trinity and The Rainey.
- Easy on and off: a side zip helps when you’re getting ready in a hurry. The Trinity and The Rainey both have one.
- The venue: outdoor shows mean grass, dust or mud. Darker leathers hide scuffs. Alvies notes that the light Snowpocalypse White Trinity shows scuffs faster as it breaks in.
- The dance floor: Alvies pitches The Rainey for everything from a football game to two-stepping at a honky-tonk.
Ankle or tall for a show?
Ankle boots are the easy choice for a long night: quick to put on, easy with jeans over the boot or cuffed above it, and good with short dresses on warm nights. Alvies says a zip-up design reduces pressure at the ankle, so The Rainey breaks in faster than tall styles.
Tall boots give the classic western look with a dress or skirt and add warmth at cooler outdoor shows. The Guadalupe has a pull-tab tall shaft and takes closer to five wears to break in, Alvies says. More in ankle boots or tall boots.
Alvies picks for the show
- The Trinity ($330): the night-out ankle boot. A snip toe, a side zip and a stacked leather heel. Colors include Past Midnight Black and Special Reserve Merlot.
- The Rainey ($330): a classic J toe, a side zip and a toe box that runs a touch roomier. Alvies calls it a boot for day to night.
- The Perry Lane ($390): knee-high, on a slightly narrower last. Alvies names weddings, dinners and music festivals.
- The Guadalupe ($365): the tall, traditional pick, with a pull-tab shaft that Alvies says fits most calves.
- For men: The Comal ($390) has a snip toe, and The Lamar ($390) is the classic J toe. Both come in D and EE widths.
Women’s styles come in sizes 5 to 12, including half sizes, and Alvies says they run true to size.
Before you go
- Wear new boots around the house first, then on short outings, before a full night out.
- Pick socks that come up above the shaft so nothing rubs.
- Check the forecast for outdoor shows. Wipe leather with a soft, dry cloth when you get home.
- Between sizes with a high arch? Alvies suggests going down half a size in The Rainey and The Guadalupe.
