Boot guides
Ankle boots or tall boots?
Both are classics. The right height depends on what you’ll wear them with, where you’re going and how you like a boot to feel. Here’s how to choose.
The short answer
Choose ankle boots if you want an easy, everyday boot that goes on fast and works with almost anything. Choose tall boots if you want the classic western look, plan to wear them with dresses or tucked-in jeans, or want more coverage in cooler weather.
In the Alvies women’s line, The Rainey and The Trinity are ankle boots, and The Guadalupe and The Perry Lane are tall. All four are handmade in León, Mexico, and run true to size.
At a glance
- Look: ankle boots read modern and easy. Tall boots read classic and make more of a statement.
- Getting them on: The Rainey and The Trinity have side zips. The Guadalupe has pull tabs on its tall shaft.
- Break-in: a side zip helps. Alvies says The Trinity takes three to five wears before a full day on your feet, and The Guadalupe closer to five, because there’s no zip to relieve the ankle.
- Width: all four come in a standard (B) width. The Rainey has a roomier toe box, and The Perry Lane is built on a slightly narrower last.
- Sizes: all four come in sizes 5 to 12, including half sizes.
When ankle boots win
- Everyday wear, from errands to dinner.
- Getting out the door fast, thanks to a side zip.
- Jeans worn over the boot or cuffed above it.
- Short dresses and skirts, for a lighter look.
- Warmer days.
The Rainey is the all-rounder: a classic silhouette at a modern ankle height, made for a full day out. The Trinity is the night-out version, with a sharper snip toe.
When tall boots win
- The classic western look.
- Dresses and skirts.
- Jeans tucked in.
- Cooler weather and evenings out.
- Big events where you want the boots to be the statement.
The Guadalupe is the original Alvies boot, based on the boots the founder’s grandfather wore. The Perry Lane goes up to the knee and is the dressiest of the four.
Which height for which occasion
- Game day, day trips and dinner: The Rainey.
- Live music, late nights and dancing: The Trinity.
- Everyday wear, dive bars and dinner out: The Guadalupe.
- Date nights, concerts and big events: The Perry Lane.

How each should fit
Whatever the height, look for the same signs of a good fit: a pop as your heel slides in, a firm hold across the instep, a little room to wiggle your toes and a little heel movement at first. New boots slip at the heel more than other shoes, and that settles as the sole flexes. More in how cowboy boots should fit.

FAQ
Are ankle or tall cowboy boots more versatile?
Ankle boots are usually easier to wear every day and with more outfits. Tall boots give the classic western look and suit dresses, skirts and tucked-in jeans.
Are tall cowboy boots harder to break in?
They can take a little longer around the ankle. Alvies says The Guadalupe takes closer to five wears, while The Trinity, which has a side zip, takes three to five.
Which Alvies boot is best for wide feet?
The Rainey. Its toe box runs a touch roomier than most. The Perry Lane is built on a slightly narrower last for cleaner lines.
Do Alvies ankle boots have a zip?
Yes. The Rainey and The Trinity both have a side zip, so they go on and off quickly.
Can Travis compare two boots for me?
