Shopping with AI
AI shopping assistant or AI shopping agent?
One helps you choose. The other buys for you. Here’s how to tell them apart, and why most shoppers still want the final say.
The short answer
An AI shopping assistant helps you choose. You describe what you need in your own words, it asks a question or two, suggests a few products and explains why, and you decide what to buy. An AI shopping agent goes a step further and acts for you, browsing stores and checking out on your behalf.
Most shoppers want the first kind. In Deloitte’s 2026 Holiday Retail Survey of 4,000 US consumers, 39% said generative AI is their primary tool for at least one holiday shopping task, but only 16% would let it complete a purchase.
Travis, the voice-first AI shopping concierge built by Lone Star Ascent AI in Dallas, is an assistant. He helps you find the right pair of Alvies boots at meettravis.ai, adds it to your cart when you say so, and leaves the buying to you.
Three kinds of AI shopping help
Most AI shopping tools fall into one of three groups. Knowing which one you’re using tells you what to expect.
- General AI assistants you bring with you. The chat apps you already use. They’re good for research across many stores, like comparing styles or summing up reviews. They work from what’s published online, so they may not know a brand’s latest fit notes or which sizes are in stock.
- A brand’s own AI shopping assistant. Built into the brand’s site, it works like a knowledgeable salesperson for that brand. It knows the catalog, the sizing and the details, and it can put the right item in your cart. Travis is this kind, for Alvies.
- AI shopping agents. Newer tools that can browse, fill in forms and check out for you. They save clicks, but they act with your accounts and payment details, so many shoppers and stores are still cautious.
Assistant vs agent at a glance
- Who decides: with an assistant, you do. With an agent, the agent does, within the limits you set.
- What it needs from you: an assistant needs a description of what you want. An agent also needs access to your accounts or payment details.
- What it’s best for: an assistant suits choices where fit, style or the occasion matter. An agent suits simple repeat buys you’ve already decided on.
Why most shoppers keep the final say
Shoppers are happy to let AI help them choose. Handing over the purchase is a bigger step, and only 16% of the shoppers Deloitte surveyed would take it.
Stores are cautious too. In October 2026, Gizmodo reported that a number of retailers had started limiting third-party AI agents on their sites, citing security and account concerns.
For boots, the case for staying in charge is simple. Fit is personal, and the right pair depends on the occasion, what you’ll wear it with and how you like a boot to feel. A good assistant helps with all of that, then lets you decide.
Where Travis fits
Travis is an AI shopping assistant, not an agent. Here’s what that means when you shop with him:
- Talk it. Type it. Tap it. Describe what you need by voice, by typing or by tapping a suggestion.
- Travis asks a follow-up question or two, then suggests two or three pairs and says why each one suits you.
- He tells you plainly when the range doesn’t have what you’re describing, rather than pushing the nearest thing in stock.
- He checks the size for the exact pair before anything goes in your cart.
- A pair goes in your cart only when you say “add it” or tap it, and you check out yourself.
- You’re never asked for a name, email address or phone number to use him.
- For questions about an order you’ve already placed, Travis passes you to the Alvies customer service team.
